Structured Products Espana: Grappling with regulation

Spain’s structured products market is losing out to safer investments, but delegates at the Structured Products España conference were not willing to write off the future. Joe Rennison reports

The sun may have been shining on the façade of The Ritz in Madrid on February 22, but the mood inside, where 200 delegates had gathered for this year’s Structured Products España conference, was gloomier – a mixture of regulatory change and competition from simple time deposits left a cloud over many of the day’s presentations.

“Overall, I think people are quite pessimistic about the business,” said Mikael Benguigui, head of equities at software vendor SuperDerivatives, speaking on the sidelines
