UK ETF trading reaches record levels in May, says Barclays

The trading of ETFs in the UK recorded a healthy uptick in May, with FTSE and emerging markets-based products dominating demand.

Trading of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the UK reached new highs in May, rising 44% from April and 52% against the same time last year, according to Barclays Stockbrokers. The rise comes from the introduction of new investors, with the number of buyers increasing by 9% on the month and 33% on the year.

"Asset flows jumped to new levels, with an increase of 108% from April and 76% increase year on year," stated the Barclays report. "Heightened volatility in the FTSE 100 over the past month
