US regulators outline future Basel II path

BOSTON AND WASHINGTON, DC -- Officials from the US banking regulators are beginning to provide more details on their plans to implement Basel II in the US.

As a result of the Basel Committee’s plans to postpone implementation of the advanced approaches until December 2007, the US is similarly postponing their year of parallel implementation until 2007, with the new framework beginning in January 2008. The agencies also plan to impose prudential floors on the Basel II calculations for the first two years after framework adoption.

This extended schedule – the US will not be implementing either the basic indicator or standardised approaches
