Basel II will have profound effect on US banks, says regulator

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - The Basel II capital accord will have profound implications for risk management techniques and capital management in the larger US banks, a leading US banking regulator said in late October.

The complex and risk-based Basel accord was just one of the challenges facing the US banking industry and its regulators, US Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) chairman Donald Powell said.

Corporate governance was another issue in which the FDIC was involved and which the agency is seeking to ensure good controls as financial organisations get larger and more complex, he told a meeting of the Florida Bankers Association.
