Are US retail investors finally embracing structured products? Participants at the Structured Products Association conference in New York last month felt so. But beneath the optimism, Robert Benson says much work is still to be done

There have been several recent developments which are going to provide a boost to structured product sales in the US. On the regulatory front, for example, the Securities Exchange Commission's new 'free writing prospectus' regulations and procedures enable offerings to be brought out more quickly and cheaply. It will also make products more understandable to investors and help issuers get their products to market more efficiently. Even the National Association of Securities Dealers' Notice 5-59
