Asia Risk magazine was launched in November 1995, just a few months after Nick Leeson brought Barings to its knees after chalking up $1.3 billion in losses trading Nikkei 225 futures contracts. The revelation that Leeson was head trader and the de facto head of back office - a dual role that enabled him to hide losses on speculative trading positions in the infamous 88888 account - put risk management firmly on the agenda of financial institutions in Asia.
