Tiaa-Cref has refined its approach to risk over the past two years. Erwin Martens, executive vice-president of risk management at the $340 billion US retirement services provider, tells Rachel Wolcott about the recent changes and challenges

Two years ago, Erwin Martens joined Tiaa-Cref from Putnam Investments to establish a risk management group. At the time, the US retirement services provider, which caters to the higher education community, had risk management practices in place but did not have a formalised team. Now, there are around 12 risk management specialists working continually to develop new risk practices and applications for the New York-based retirement giant.
