EDF Energy to cut CO2 emissions by up to 60%

UK utility EDF Energy, part of the EDF Group, has committed to reduce the carbon intensity of its electricity generation activities by 60% by 2020, in part by building new nuclear capacity.

Based on its current generation fleet, this represents a reduction of around 12 million tonnes annually by 2020. To meet these targets, the company states that nuclear power must be part of the energy mix to balance security of supply, climate change and energy prices.

“Subject to UK government policy and public acceptability we will play our part in replacing the UK's ageing nuclear fleet over the next two decades,” says an EDF Energy spokesperson.
