As 'talent sans frontieres' may describe the truly global hedge fund industry, these days, incubators have emerged on both sides of the Atlantic, seeking to help the world's best alpha-seekers onto their feet.

M.D. Sass in the US, for example, has been providing seed money to incubate emerging investment managers since 1985. The first hedge fund strategy of "meaningful size," according to Martin Sass, chief executive officer, was Re-Enterprise Partners, a distressed securities fund strategy
