Luxembourg continues to dominate onshore hedge fund industry in Europe

With an eye on the competition, Luxembourg has enacted flexible and attractive legislation aimed at tempting more hedge funds to domicile in the tiny European state. Combined with its predominance and expertise in Ucits products, as well as a highly reputable stock exchange, the country looks set to increase its importance to the industry. Jamie Wynn-Williams reports on past performance and future prospects

In Luxembourg the appetite for alternative investment strategies is growing. Flexible regulation has led many, including Michael Ferguson, asset management leader for Ernst & Young Luxembourg, to believe that the jurisdiction is the leading global fund distribution centre in the world.

The Luxembourg financial centre has achieved what Ferguson calls a "quality brand" enabling its fund products to access distribution channels not accessible to many competing centres.
