By the time the first big "wave" of European institutional money flowed into hedge funds around 2002, Fred Siegrist had long since reached the shore, and had enjoyed many rounds in the alternative asset café.

Siegrist, chief executive officer of RMF, a core investment manager of Man Investments that he joined in 2002, had waded beyond the long-only world by starting to build Swiss Life's alternative assets operations in 1996, which mainly focused on hedge funds and private equity.
