Does one size really fit all?

If investing in single hedge funds is too difficult, an ever-expanding range of vehicles is open to those seeking exposure to hedge funds. Mathieu Vaissié, research associate at the Edhec Risk and Asset Management Research Centre assesses the options

Since the selection process for investing directly in single hedge funds is extremely challenging and the integration of single hedge funds in a traditional portfolio complex, direct investing in hedge funds is generally reserved for sophisticated investors.

An alternative to this approach is to gain exposure to hedge fund strategies through third parties, for example, through (diversified) funds of hedge funds or through (composite) investable hedge fund indices (or index-linked products).
