Andrew Tjaardstra meets HSBC Securities Services’ head of global custody John van Verre and discovers how the custodian has been coping with the turbulent market conditions and where it sees opportunities to grow

Dutchman John van Verre was promoted to head of global custody at HSBC at the beginning of 2011. Previously he had headed up its securities services unit in Singapore from 2008 and had a brief stint as acting managing director of securities services in Ireland. His current role is one of the premier jobs within custody. HSBC’s global custody unit employs 800 people in offices across the world with a sub-custody network in 39 markets; altogether there are more than 7,000 staff in HSBC’s
