Given the lack of a dominant energy trading and risk management software vendor, it is tempting for companies to think ‘we’ll have to build a system’, if they are to meet the full needs of the business. Choosing whether to build or buy is not an easy decision, but its impact on a firm’s costs, efficiency and hence profits is such that it requires as much objectivity as any other major investment decision.
